The problem

Marketing had plenty of campaign data. Sales had renewal dates, account health and closed revenue. The two were rarely in the same place. Leadership wanted to know whether marketing engagement had any relationship to renewals and new revenue, and Sales wanted to know which of their buyers were paying attention and which accounts were quietly going cold.

In a subscription business where most accounts renew, the accounts that do not renew are the story. An unsubscribe from a key contact, or a long stretch of silence from an account that used to engage, is useful information if the right person sees it in time.

What I built

This work grew in two stages. As a Senior Marketing Associate I created the post-campaign engagement report that went to every sales manager after each send. It listed engaged buyers by account and flagged unsubscribes in real time as an early warning for at-risk accounts.

As Manager, I turned that into a churn early-warning system and built the company's first account-level attribution log. The log connects marketing engagement to renewals and closed revenue at the account level, so a renewal or a new deal can be traced back to the campaigns and contacts that were engaging along the way.

  • A churn early-warning workflow that watches for unsubscribes and engagement drop-off inside accounts approaching renewal.
  • Account-level attribution that maps contact engagement up to the account record and its outcomes.
  • Reporting that connects marketing engagement to renewals and closed revenue for leadership.
  • Sales-facing reporting that shows engaged buyers and potential account risk.

How it works

  1. Campaign activity
  2. Contact engagement
  3. Account mapping
  4. Engagement history
  5. Sales and renewal context
  6. Risk or opportunity signal
  7. Sales visibility

The example below is a fictional view of the kind of signal the workflow produces. The accounts, dates and statuses are invented.

Sanitized demonstration using synthetic data. Accounts, engagement values, renewal windows and statuses are fictional.

Account signals ahead of renewal

Account Engagement, last six sends What changed Renewal Signal
Account A Engagement increasing across three contacts Renewal in 90 days Opportunity
Account B Unsubscribe detected from primary contact Renewal in 45 days Review
Account C Steady engagement, no changes Renewal in 210 days Stable
Account D No opens in 90 days, contact left organization Renewal in 30 days At risk

Sales-facing view. The same contact-to-account mapping also feeds the campaign-level reporting for Marketing.

My role

I designed the reporting logic, built the mapping between contacts and accounts, defined what counted as a risk signal versus an opportunity signal, and worked with sales managers on what they actually needed to see. Getting buy-in mattered as much as the build: the data connecting engagement to pipeline is what earned Sales' attention and support for higher send frequency.

Business value

Leadership gained a way to see marketing's relationship to renewals and closed revenue across a portfolio with a 97% renewal rate. Sales gained early warning on accounts drifting toward cancellation and a clearer picture of who was engaged before a renewal conversation.

The reporting has surfaced multiple accounts that warranted direct Sales follow-up. In one case, an unsubscribe revealed that the original customer contact had left the organization and the replacement was unaware of the service. Follow-up re-established the relationship and ultimately resulted in an upgraded subscription. There have been several similar cases across markets.

The renewal rate belongs to the whole business, not to this tool. What the tool changed is how early the right people found out about a problem.
